MESSY PET for the litter box

Introducing a kitten to the family is both exciting and rewarding. However, it is not all fun and games. What about that litter box? Training your kitten to use the litter box does not have to be a difficult, smelly task. With these steps, your cat will become potty trained in no time.

Cats instinctively want to relieve themselves and then bury the evidence in a soft, “dig-able” area. This is why sand boxes are a favorite! With that in mind…

  • Know when to start. Kittens can litter box train for about four weeks. If you adopt a kitten, start training them immediately.
  • Put the litter box in a private area. Cats are discrete and may feel too exposed. Try a hooded box – it helps reduce odor and contain the litter when your cat digs.
  • Show your kitten where the litter box is and make sure they can enter easily. Also, leave a little urine in the box to reinforce that this is where your kitten should relieve herself. The scent marks it as her spot.

Although cats are not too difficult to train, slip-ups can occur. What can you do?

  • She may not like the type of litter you’ve provided or may not like the box.
  • Completely remove the smell with enzymatic cleaners, like MESSY PET CAT Stain & Odor Remover.
  • Do not scold your cat. Some people punish their cat by rubbing its nose in the mess and then plopping it into the litter box, which isn’t the right move because your cat won’t understand why you’re doing this.
